Description

The Markarian's Chain is a series (of at least seven) galaxies constituting a significant part of the Virgo Cluster. Seen from Earth, the galaxies lie along a seemingly curved line, forming the mentioned chain. It is a favorite sight in the spring sky, especially for those with slightly smaller telescope focal lengths. It's also a neat and intriguing area for visual observation.

Charles Messier discovered the first two of these galaxies - M84 and M86 - in 1781. The remaining galaxies visible in the chain were discovered by William Herschel and are now mainly known by their NGC catalog numbers. Ultimately, the whole chain was named after Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the early 1960s.

Research on the relationship between distances and velocities among the galaxies indicates that probably seven out of the eight main galaxies in the chain belong to the same kinematic chain system. This system rotates as a rigid body at the same angular velocity, simultaneously moving away from us at a speed of about 700 km/s. Only the galaxy NGC 4374 on the outskirts of the Markarian's Chain does not seem to belong to this system, as it does not fit into the structure of the distance-velocity relationship.
