Description

This image is an L(H+R)GB composite showing the galaxy NGC 925, a type SAB(s)d spiral in Triangulum.  All subs were collected using the Esprit 100ED refractor from my Bortle 4+ backyard.  With dimensions of 10.5’ x 5.9’ and visual magnitude of 9.9, NGC 925 is larger than several other galaxies that are commonly imaged by amateurs.  However, it is a challenging target in terms of surface brightness, and it required a lot of integration time to achieve a satisfactory result.  In fact, I started data collection in December of 2022, and I’m publishing this image nearly a year later.  Considering its reasonable size, NGC 925 has been rather unloved on Astrobin, and as I post this image on 11/22/23, I can only find one image of it that earned Top Picks status back in 2017.

To the upper right of NGC 925 is a very faint patch of light designated [KKH2007] dJ0226+3325, which I suspect to be a dwarf galaxy that is associated with NGC 925.  My skies are not dark enough to make it stand out in the image, but at least it is there.

There were not many interesting background galaxies in this field of view, so the image is cropped fairly severely.  The small, S-shaped galaxy at the upper right is LEDA 2029584 (PGC 2029584), of 17th magnitude and measuring 0.8’ x 0.4’.  To the lower right of NGC 925, the faint fuzzy patch is PGC 2034188, a galaxy of magnitude 18.45.

In the upper right corner of the image is the intensely blue star UCAC3 247:15057 (FBS 0224+330), which is categorized as a hot subdwarf.  It is so blue that I thought it might be a planetary nebula at first, but it is just an interesting star according to Aladin Lite/SIMBAD.
