Description

I have played with near infrared imaging (NIR) to suppress detrimental effect of light pollution (bortle 7-9).
I used NIKR for both star cluster imaging and galaxy imaging.
Here are my taking on this.
1. Due to camera sensor sensitivity NIR is 2-3 times weaker than Lum. So, if integration 5h with Lum, it has to be 12-15h with NIR.
2. NIR is excellent in overcoming light pollution. This is especially obvious on galaxies.
3. NIR images are sharper FWHM is lower.
4. NIR images pick up more stars and enhance yellow-red stars much more than blue stars.
Overall, ikf someone image clusters and galaxies from light-polluted locations, NIR is must, but integration will be longer. Recommended ration R:G:B:Lum:NIR= 1:1:1:3:6-10.

This is image of NGC188 LRGB-NIR annotation (Panel D), NGC188 LRGB-NIR (Panel C), NGC188 RGB-NIR (Panel B), and NGC188 LRGB (Panel A).

Processing:
WBPP was used to combine all Lum and NIR frames. It is named LNIR. Individual Lum and NIR were also use.
R, G, B, Lum, NIR and LNIR were cropped.
GraExpert applied for RR, G, B, Lum, NIR and LNIR
RGB were combined.
DBE for RGB
Color calibration for RGB.
Blur and Noise XT for RGB, Lum, NIR and LNIR.
Manual stretching in HT for RGB, Lum, NIR and LNIR
LRGB-NIR, RGB-NIR and LRGB were created by LRGB-combined.
Noise XT, stretch again.
Mask with Lum, which is enhanced with Morphological Transformation.
Curve for star saturation and brightness adjustments.
Image LRGB-NIR was annotated (Panel D)
Done.
