Description

One thousand light-years from Earth, embryonic dust clouds are baking the ingredients for new life. Embedded in these dark cauls are around 150 young proto-stars of less than a million years old, and a number of circumstellar discs where new planets are busy forming. The region pictured is about 10 x 8 light-years across in the constellation of Perseus, and would take our fastest space probe about 200,000 years to traverse one side to the other. —This target has been my nemesis for the past two months, scratching time here and there between cloud and moonlight. Even at 42 hours, I’m nowhere near satisfied with the clarity of this extremely dim region. But eventually one has to draw a line under a project, being unwilling to spend another two months just to marginally improve the noise.
