Description

This pair of galaxies is located in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +55 degrees.

NGC 3733 is obscured by the glare of the magnitude 5.6 orange star HD 100615.  I tried to process the glare of the star to reduce it somewhat.  NGC 3733 is a grand design spiral located 75 million light years away.  It is 5 arc-minutes in apparent size, which corresponds to a diameter of 105,000 light years. Its orientation at 15 degrees from edge-on prevents us from seeing much disk detail.

NGC 3738 is a lovely irregular dwarf galaxy located only 16 million light years away.   It is 13,000 light years in diameter.  The inner region glow blue, with many star clouds seen, reflection its star-forming phase.

Several other interesting galaxy structures are seen in the background.
