Description

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula, or IC 1396A, is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth. It, and the whole of IC 1396, is illuminated and ionized by the very bright, massive star, HD 206267, just to the east of IC 1396A.

Nice to revisit this target on a couple of clearish nights at the end of August 2022...captured some RGB for the stars as well, so opted to process the dual narrowband as captured in terms of colour scheme for a more natural look, rather than using a Hubble-style palette. Notable for me, was the excellent guiding I achieved with my mount (0.35-0.6" RMS over the two nights).

Another cool capture in the image is the small blue planetary nebula, PK100+04.1, to the right below the Garnet Star - a pleasant surprise when processing!

Thank you for looking!
