NGC 3579 is an **emission nebula** in the constellation Carina, about 6,500 light years away from Earth¹. It was discovered by **John Herschel** in 1834¹².

NGC 3579 is part of a larger nebulous region that also includes NGC 3576, NGC 3581, NGC 3582, NGC 3584 and NGC 3586¹. These are all bright patches of ionized gas that are illuminated by the radiation from hot stars¹. NGC 3579 is also known as ESO 129-EN8²³.

NGC 3579 has an apparent magnitude of **11.0** and can be seen with a medium-sized telescope¹. It appears as a diffuse patch of light near the star Lambda Centauri¹. It is best seen from the southern hemisphere during autumn and winter months¹.
