Description

Lion Nebula (Sh2-132) in SE Cepheus
Most of August 2023 (finalized 8/26/23)

Borg 125 f/8 + ZWO ASI 2600 mm Pro with Chroma filters on 10Micron GM1000
2-panel mosaic
For each panel, R ~ G ~ B ~ 16 x 60s (just for stars)
Ha = O3 = 34 x 600s ; Total exposure per panel ~ 12 hours, 24 hours total

This very faint nebula is composed of fluorescent oxygen (blue) and hydrogen (red) plasma.

In the sky it’s located right on the border of the constellations Cepheus the King and Lacerta the Lizard.

Tough capture. Had to return to the same place in the sky over and over for many nights over the month of August, dodging the moon and clouds and rain. It’s very high in the sky and I have a "dead zone" near the zenith with this long refractor imaging chain that can't be dealt with through a meridian flip. I had to stop the mount tracking each night about 1:10 am, wait until 1:50 am, then start again from the other side of the zenith. Complicated sequence in NINA!I

like the way the dark dust is silhouetted on the glowing gas to provide details of the lion’s face as he turns to look at us over his left shoulder. It’s also wild how the lion’s head and front shoulders are orange (strong in both Ha and O3) but his rear haunches are that lovely O3 cyan.

The Lion floats in the Perseus arm of our Galaxy, about 10,400 light years away. We see him about the time our ancestors invented crops in the Fertile Crescent.
