Description

Nestled between the Orion nebula and the Witch Head nebula, SH2-278 is an often overlooked dark nebula complex rimmed with abundant Ha emissions.

The blue clouds are areas of interstellar dust that are reflecting blue light from nearby bright star Rigel.  Rigel is also responsible for illuminating the nearby Witch Head nebula.

This image was captured with my FSQ106 at the same time as the larger RiDK400 was imaging a closeup on SH-278.  That closeup image was my first IoTD.  I tried to incorporate that data into this image in order to bring out more detail in SH-278.  However, I had to give up after many hours of trying.  The small field of view with the RiDK made it to difficult to blend.  Only a very small improvement was visible after blending in the sharp edges of the RiDK data.
