Description

Wide field shot of the Tulip Nebula (Sh2-101), which is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, about 6000 light-years away. With the wider field, the rich field of stars, including the open cluster NGC 6871, and gas and dark nebulae can also be seen. Next to the Tulip (bottom and to the right) is a bow shock wave caused by the relativistic jets emanating perpendicular to the accretion disk of the black hole Cygnus X-1. The curved bow shock structure seen in the image is the result of this jet interacting with a dense interstellar medium. This is the first blackhole discovered and most powerful x-ray source observed in our galaxy.
