Juvenile Bald Eagle

Description

For something a little different, I am uploading pictures of all of the critters that visit my scopes in the backyard as I photograph them. I am putting them into a 'collection' on my page. Hopefully over time there will be quite a few! Its a break from deep sky, and as long as my scopes are in the shot I figure they qualify for Astrobin .

Now that the ice has retreated from the Burlington Bay, the eagles have returned to their hunting ground. My wife and I are very lucky to have a pair of adult bald eagles nesting nearby. This year, there is also a juvenile. You can spot the white plumage in the inset. This guy hung around for quite some time. I took the wide angle shot through a window, thinking it would leave before I got my 300mm lens. The inset was taken through an open doorway - it turns out I had plenty of time.

The bald eagle was almost extinct in the mid 20th century due to typical human stupidity - the pesticide DDT. Today the population is thriving in part due to some planned breeding across international borders. This is one of the best examples of cooperation between Canada and the US and demonstrates what we can do when we put our minds to it.
