Description

The Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex includes reflection, emission, and dark nebulae. The large blue nebula on the left is the Rho Ophiuchi Nebula, IC 4604. The light of the star in its middle, designated Rho Ophiuchi, is reflected by a cloud of dust. Its blue color is due to the Rayleigh Effect, the same phenomenon that causes our sky to be blue. There are several, smaller blue nebulae in the picture. The large orange nebula is the Antares Nebula, IC 4606, another reflection nebula. The bright star powering it is Antares, near the right side.  The red objects in the picture are emission nebulae, clouds of glowing, ionized hydrogen. The prominent red nebula at the top is SH2-9, surrounding the bright multi-star system called Alniyat.  The extensive brown and black nebulosity, particularly noticeable in the lower left of the picture, is dark nebulosity, clouds of cool dense gas that are blocking the light coming from behind them.

The rig used to shoot this colorful cloud complex is shown in Revision C.
