Description

I would love to have had more time on this region, but I got a very late start on it and could only get one to two hours per night on it. It's also a pretty low target for me residing in southern Serpens (800 light years away), which is traditionally a region for southern-hemisphere astrophotographers. This image came out a little softer than I'd like--probably because of its low position on the horizon. But until I get a scope in the southern hemisphere, this will have to do. There aren't many shots of this on Astrobin, so I thought it was a target worth pursuing.

The orange colored Serpens Reflection Nebula (SRN) resides just below vdB 123 in the image. The field is chock full of other, smaller reflection nebulas splattered across the larger Serpens Cloud (Dobashi 1260), a dark molecular cloud that functions as a star nursery. The SRN's bi-polar shape is thought to be sculpted by strong magnetic fields from its central star, Serpens/SVS 2.
