Description

This image of edge on galaxy NGC 5907 was a real challenge to process.  For reasons I haven't yet figured out the sky flats I shot at twilight strongly over corrected the lights during calibration.  I never had this problem before and I didn't make any changes to my work flow.  After much trial and error I was able to mostly salvage this image by calibrating each light frame twice, once with darks only and the second time with darks and flats with an extra 20000 ADU added to each master flat; and then these two sets of lights were averaged together image by image to create a new set of subs that were processed into this image.  On top of that many of the color subs were shot through high thin monsoon moisture clouds that came in about midnight Saturday and shut me down shortly thereafter.  So there is a lot of color noise in this image.  And did I mention the seeing wasn't that good?  Fortunately this galaxy will be well placed for the next few months, so I plan to get better data in June's imaging trip to the Tehachapi mountains.
