Description

vdB 9, also known as van den Bergh 9, is a weak reflection nebula in Cassiopeia. It's about 3 light years wide and is located about 1400 light years away. The nebula is illuminated by the bright star HD 17463 (SU Cass) at its center.  It's that really bright star in the top right quarter of the image blending into that huge dark nebula (LDN 1357).

The dust in vdB 9 reflects starlight from the hot star SU Cassiopeia, giving the nebula a blueish tint. This is a characteristic of classical reflection nebulas. SU Cass is a Cepheid variable star, but it's too faint to see with the naked eye.

vdB 9 appears like a light blue translucent gel that smears across the screen as it ducks behind the dark nebulae LDN 1357 and LDN 1355 which snake across the sky until they connect with LDN 1358 towards the bottom right quarter of the image.

The entire region is permeated with dust.  In this 22 hour exposure, the dust reflects the light of the stars and appears in yellow, brown, red, or blue natural color tones.
