Sun Pillar and Halo on Ellesmere

Description

Snowmobiled about 200 miles north of Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian high arctic guided by local Inuit hunters. Other than general exploration, wildlife photography was the purpose of the expedition. We saw ptarmigan, arctic hares, muskoxen, and polar bears. Unfortunately, wolves were elusive; fresh tracks at our first camp when we arrived, and one showed up at our furthest north camp the day after we left.... Like I experienced in Greenland a couple years ago, the light in the arctic is like no other. There's a softness and evenness to it such that once you set exposure and aperture, you're pretty much good, all day long, no matter what direction you point!
