Description

New version of the Spaghetti Nebula (Sh2-240) with 180sec. subs.
The Spaghetti Nebula (also known as Sh2-240) is a supernova remnant visible in the constellation Taurus, about 4 degrees southeast of the star β Tauri, bordering the constellation Auriga.
The nebula, discovered in 1952, appears in the form of very delicate filaments, created by an ancient supernova that exploded about 40,000 years ago, about 4800 light years from the Solar System, on the Perseus Arm.
Among the gaseous residues of the exploded star, composed mainly of ionized hydrogen and oxygen, are its remains, a rapidly rotating neutron star, a pulsar that emits strong radio signals.
In the sky it occupies about 3 degrees. For reference, the full Moon has an angular diameter of approximately 0.5 degrees. If the distance measurements were correct, the object would have a real size of 160 light years.
