What is the Markarian Chain?

The Markarian Chain is a chain of galaxies near the core of the Virgo Cluster of galaxies. The Markarian Chain is named after the Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, however, the honor of discovery goes to Charles Messier (for M84 and M86 middle part of the image on the right ) and William Herschell for the other members of the chain a few years later.

The most prominent galaxies in this group are M84 and M86, a pair of giant elliptical galaxies separated by about 17 arcminutes. The next two links in this chain are NGC4435 and 4438. This pair is cataloged as Arp 120 and is also called "The Eyes" these galaxies interact with each other (middle part of the image on the left).

To photograph the whole Markarian chain I would need a slightly shorter focal length (300 mm would be enough with a DSLR camera) and since my focal length is 1000 mm I have focused on the right part of the chain (the part opposite to the stars VINDEMIATRIX and AUVA) photographing a little more than one degree of the three that contain the whole chain.

The vast majority of the galaxies contained in Markarian are lenticular galaxies, with NGC4435 and 4438 standing out.

The acquisition was carried out from the skies of Bortle 3 at the Alto Turia Astronomical Center (CAAT) on April 10,11,12 and 13 of this year.

There is something I want to highlight that at first it seemed like a failure in the processing. It is a galaxy that is located in the central part of the image and below in blue. Well, it is not a process failure, it is IC3355, which is located 15,916,431.23 light years from Earth.

¿Que es la Cadena Markarian?

La Cadena de Markarian es una cadena de galaxias cerca del núcleo del Cúmulo de Galaxias de Virgo, La Cadena de Markarian lleva el nombre del astrofísico armenio Benjamin Markarian, sin embargo, el honor del descubrimiento es para Charles Messier (para M84 y M86 parte media de la imagen a la derecha) y William Herschell para el resto de miembros de la cadena unos años más tarde.

Las galaxias más destacadas de este grupo son M84 y M86, un par de galaxias elípticas gigantes separadas por unos 17 minutos de arco. Los siguientes dos eslabones de esta cadena son NGC4435 y 4438. Este par está catalogado como Arp 120 y también se llama "Los Ojos" estas galaxias interactúan entre si (parte central de la imagen a la izquierda).

Para fotografiar toda la cadena Markarian necesitaría una focal un poco mas corta (300 mm serian suficiente con una cámara DSLR).Dado que mi focal es de 1000mm me he centrado en la parte derecha de la cadena (la parte opuesta a las estrellas VINDEMIATRIX y AUVA) fotografiando algo mas de un grado de los tres que contienen toda la cadena.

La gran mayoría de las galaxias contenidas en Markarian son galaxias lenticulares destacando como ya he dicho NGC4435 y 4438.

La adquisición se ha llevado a cabo desde cielos del Bortle 3 en el Centro Astronómico Alto Turia (CAAT) los días 10,11,12 y 13  de abril del año en curso.

Hay algo que quiero destacar que en principio me parecio un fallo en el procesado. Se trata de una galaxia que se encuenta en la parte central de la imagen y abajo de color azul. Pues bien no se trata de ningun fallo de proceso se trata de IC3355 que se encuentra a 15.916.431,23 años luz de la tierra.
