Description

This has been a work in progress since May 2023 when I first noticed a very faint O3 bubble in a wide image of the Running Chicken Nebula. This is an early WIP of data captured in HOO combination. G296.1-0.5 was first discovered in 1975, and all mentions of it to date* only show a Ha bubble in papers I have been able to find. There is a lot of interesting nebulosity in this region and this SNR is much larger than previous thought. Previous records put this SNR at 37' x 25' however this image shows it is nearly twice that, and at least 60' in length.

I will be posing a follow up to this with additional info as I continue to work through my library of data to bring it all together.

I have been begun calling this the Poseidon Nebula, for it looks like a man made of waves, arms raised, holding a trident.

G296.1-0.5 as listed in the Galactic Supernova Remnants Catalogue

*Edit: Andy also recently published a phenomenal image showing some of the O3 shell. Love seeing more of this object appear as this area of the sky once again become accessible.
