Description

NNGC 4038 and NGC 4039, collectively known as the Antennae Galaxies, are a pair of interacting galaxies about 45 million light-years from the Earth.  They are engaged in a gravitational interaction that has distorted their shapes and triggered intense star formation.  It is thought that the pair will eventually merge into a single elliptical galaxy.
