Description

Probably the toughest galaxy I have yet to image, this is the Cat's Eye Galaxy (M94 / NGC4736) in Canes Venatici.

Data acquisition over the span of 3 evenings at a native focal length of 2032mm with my Celestron 8" Edge HD SCT (no reducer) at f/10.

7.72 hours total acquisition time

M94 is oddly shaped, having two ring structures. It has an inner ring of newly formed stars surrounding its nucleus, giving it not only an unusual appearance but also a strong interior glow.

Recent observations have revealed the outer, fainter ring is not closed and relatively complex. M94 spans about 30,000 light years, lies about 15 million light years away, and can be seen with a small telescope toward the constellation of the Canes Venatici.
