Description

Located 2,000 light-years away from Earth away in the constellation Cancer, Abell 31 (Sh2-290, PK 219+31.1) is a dim but relatively large (48.3 x 33 arcmin) planetary nebula composed mostly of a core of OIII and rim of Ha signal, though just enough thin eccentric rim of Sii to add signal along the southern (right) rim in this orientation along the bow shock edge.   The tiny (0.86 arcmin) spiral galaxy IC523 (UGC 4652) is seen just up and to the right of Abell 31, located @ an estimated 386 million light years (123.6 Mpc) from our solar system.
