Description

While many of us see the Moon in shades of greyish white, the Moon is much more colorful than what we see visually through our atmosphere. I have re-processed the grey-dominant image of the Worm Moon I took the other night to reveal the mineral colors of our beautiful Moon.

The colors help identify the composition of the Moon's surface. The lunar highlands have minerals composed of silicon, calcium and aluminum.  In the lunar basins, shades of blue and orange reveal minerals deposited by ancient volcanic lava flows. Dark blues indicate areas rich in titanium-bearing minerals. Shades of orange indicate areas rich in iron.
