Description

Here is our image of the Cygnus Loop.

The Cygnus Loop (radio source W78, or Sharpless 103) is a large supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cygnus, an emission nebula measuring nearly 3° across.

Many well-known nebulae can be found in this SNR, the Western Veil (NGC 6960), the Eastern Veil (NGC 6992, NGC 6995, and IC 1340) and the Pickering's Triangle for the best known.

What we see here is the result of a star that exploded around 10,000 years ago.

Its apparent size (as seen from Earth) covers about 3 full moons.

There are many cases of pareidolia in astronomy, and there are several in this image.
Some see Batman's Joker or Alien in profile in the upper left, others see a skull and crossbones across the whole image.

But we can also imagine seeing "The Scream", the famous painting by Edvard Munch. The image's name is a nod to this work, symbolizing the scream that continues to echo through space after the star's death.
