Description

LBN 471/473 and Wolf-Rayet StarsColorful LBN 471 is part of the Lion Nebula in Cepheus. I framed my image to feature the yellow-orange star forming region in the lower left but also to highlight the unusual jet of light-colored material in the same area. That feature is so odd that I undertook to examine other astro images of LBN 471 to insure there was nothing amiss with my exposures (the feature resembles a film "light leak"). All of the pictures I inspected share this attribute and with additional research I found out that the stars responsible are Wolf-Rayet stars, at least 20 times more massive than the Sun, millions of times brighter and with extremely powerful solar winds caused by the massive and rapid expulsion of star stuff into space.
