Description

The Cat's Eye Nebula is a planetary nebula in Draco, discovered by William Herschel in 1786, and is about 3200 light years distant.  It was the first planetary nebula whose spectrum showed that planetaries were gaseous and not stellar in nature.  At the bottom of the image is NGC 6552, a barred spiral at 365 million light years distant.

It has a bright inner core which tends to be blown out during imaging as well as an extended outer halo.  It is quite a bit brighter in OIII than in Ha.  Many hours were imaged at lengths of 30sec and 60sec to process as an HDR integration but were ultimately not used.  Instead, the 180sec OIII and Ha images were barely stretched to linear since all the details of the core were clearly present, followed by an HOO combine in PixelMath,  then added near the end of processing to the final processed outer halo.  See attachment for a cropped image of the core as well as stretched Ha and OII images.

Imaged on several nights:  May 31; Jun 1-2, 5, 10-11, 19; Jul 3, 2023.
