Description

Coming off a full Moon, this evening didn't present many broadband opportunities. Ideally I wanted to use the ZWO ASI294MC camera for a single night project and as I like star clusters I chose NGC 1528.

Some of my other favourite targets are those contained in the Sharpless Catalogue and after examining some of the images here on Astrobin I soon became aware that Sh2-209 would fall into frame. Even though Sh2-209 is small I still wanted to get as much of this in the image as possible during one night and so added my Optolong L-Extreme filter to the filter wheel. This allows me to capture Hydrogen and Oxygen with a colour camera. I then split my imaging time between the Chroma UV/IR filter and the Optolong L-Extreme capturing the RGB of the star field and Ha and Oiii of Sh2-209 (admittedly SH2-209 revealed very little Oiii).

When it came to processing I used the WBPP script to calibrate and stack the RGB channels separately. I then used WBPP again to stack the HO channels. This resulted in four separate images, R, G, B and HO. The Ho, R and B channels were then Star Aligned against the Green channel to produce the same orientation in each.

Parking the narrowband image for now, I processed the RGB channels to create the coloured star field. I then commenced work on the HO image creating a starless version of Sh2-209 in red. This was then added to the RGB image using Pixel Math and resulted in the image we see here.

All the best,

John
