Description

IC 443, also called SNR G189.1+03.0, 3C 157, Sh2-248 and CTB 20.1 is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Gemini. It has a diameter of approximately 50 arcminutes and belongs to the Gem OB1 stellar association. It is also informally called the Medusa Nebula.

IC 443 is a supernova remnant of mixed morphology. In the visible spectrum and in radio frequencies, it shows a shell-like morphology, and consists of two interconnected subshells, each of them of a different size and with a different center. A third, larger subshell, initially attributed to IC 443, is now considered the remnant of another, older supernova (approximately 100,000 years old).
