Description

This is Sh2-132, commonly called the Lion Nebula, in the constellation of Cepheus. It reveals a complex structure of hydrogen and oxygen emission areas, star clusters and dark dust regions. The emissions are driven by strong stellar radiation from two Wolf-Rayet stars in its interior (HD 211564 and HD 211853). The Lion Nebula lies at a distance of 10,000 light years in the Perseus Arm of our galaxy.
This image is a composite of frames captured through hydrogen alpha and doubly ionized oxygen filters for the nebula itself, with separate frames for the stars captured through red, green and blue filters.
