Description

Rho Ophiuchi from Dry Tortugas National Park. I’m not sure there is a darker place in the eastern part of the US. 70 miles from Key West, the park is one of the most isolated and beautiful national parks. Possibly a Bortle 1 according to light pollution map.info. Though I think this may depend on the number of shrimping boats out that night.

I’m still very new to astrophotography so I had a nasty light leak in this photo, forcing me to crop it more than I wanted to. I’m assuming it was due to leaving on image review.

Also this was the darkest place I’ve ever shot, so I underestimated how difficult it would be to polar align with hundreds more stars than I’m used to and zero cell towers to use an astronomy application. I have to laugh a little at myself. This experience was wonderful though, I highly recommend anyone visit there at least once.
