Description

Comet ATLAS (C/2020 M3) passed through the constellation of Orion this past week. I captured this image on the morning of November 14th, one day before the comet made its closest approach to Earth. The comet is located in the upper right just to the southwest of the bright star Bellatrix. My me, like many, the constellation Orion is an all time astrophotography favorite and inspired my initial astronomical observations and later initial dive into astrophotography. The sight of a bright green comet amid the pastel red nebulae of Orion is an interesting change-up on the usual vista.

Imaged with 85mm/F1.4 Rokinon at F/2, IDAS LPS-D1 Clip Filter, and full spectrum modified Nikon D5300.

Total integration time was ~1 hours using 30 subs at ISO200 x 120 sec. Pre-processed using PixInsight Batch Pre-Processing (BPP) script. Images calibrated using darks, bias, and flats. Post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE, MLT for noise reduction, stretched using masked stretch, TGVDenoise for noise reduction, and Local histogram transform.
