Description

Here is my widefield image of 12P/ Pons-Brooks. It took me three attempts. The first night I discovered (after going home... ) I had acquired hundreds of ONE SECOND exposures instead of the longer exposures I intended to get. It was due to the fact I had an older version of Backyard EOS and a newer model camera (Canon Ra)- and there was a bug in the software that was later (a few years ago!) fixed. So updating the software fixed that. I was pretty disappointed!

On my next attempt a layer of clouds persisted on the horizon and prevented me from capturing the comet. Finally on the third attempt (on the 12th of March 2024) everything went well and I had my once-in-a-lifetime shot at Pons-Brooks. With the moon being an issue for the next few weeks and then the comet sinking towards the horizon subsequently- I think this particular evening was literally the last good night!

I will be creating a video that highlights many of the significant processing choices I made for this image in Comet Academy.
The video is now live at: https://youtu.be/Bc7DWVgz8Ds?si=4N1WZCGqOU5WuRjb
