Description

The Raspberry Nebula (AKA Strawberry Nebula) consists of emission nebula Sh2-263 and reflection nebula vdB 38, at a distance of approximately 1,300 light years from Earth. A relatively young and hot star (HD 34989) ionizes the hydrogen gas producing the red emission nebula. The star isn't hot enough to ionize heavier elements such as carbon, nickel, and iron ejected from long forgotten supernovae. Instead, the energy from the star reflects off the molecular clouds and back to us as bluish wisps in a sea of red.
