Also known as the Crescent Nebula, the 25 light-year-span NGC 6888 is a "cosmic bubble" blown by a massive, bright star at its center. Narrowband image data showing emission from Ha and OIII within the Bubble Nebula. The oxygen atoms that create the blue-green hue appear to be wrapped in fine wrinkles and filaments. The star clearly visible in the center of NGC 6888 is a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136).

The outer shell of the star is constantly escaping under the action of the powerful stellar wind, and the star will lose one solar mass of material every ten thousand years. The nebula's complex structure is likely the result of the interaction of powerful stellar winds with earlier ejected matter. Burning through fuel at an alarming rate, the star is nearing the end of its stellar life and will end its life in a magnificent supernova explosion. NGC 6888 lies 5,000 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Cygnus.
