Description

Went camping out at the astronomy club's dark sky site (Bortle 5...) and observatory this last weekend!

The Cocoon Nebula displays three kinds of nebula -- emission, reflection, and dark. The reflection nebula is less obvious here than, say, the Trifid, but you can still see some blue parts. The light-absorbing molecular dust cloud that partly surrounds it extends far up to the top of the image and beyond. The red emission region spans about 15 lightyears, and is at a distance of about 2,500 lightyears. The Cocoon is located in the constellation Cygnus -- yes, we're approaching Milky Way season again already! It's up late in the night, after about 1 or 2 AM right now. The emission nebula is home to several newborn stars, and there are also several young stellar objects in the dusty tail.
