Description

Sh2-302 has been called the Snowman Nebula, but I don’t think that is accurate. It is a pear with the top ripped off? A ball of cotton candy? Slimer from Ghostbusters? Maybe it’s best just to call it Sharpless 302.It is part of the GS234-02 supershell, which contains several other Sharpless objects, and it is about 6000 light years away. The tiny reflection nebula just off the northern edge is GN 07.30.2.I collaborated with Charles Pevsner on this image; he acquired the data and I processed it. Also see our image of Sh2-302’s neighbor, Sh2-301.
