Description

This is my best and most challenging DSO to date.

This winters climate has been special and nothing less than terrible, with very few clear nights, and a lot of thin clouds and humidity. So out of ten nights and about 50 hours of imaging time, I chose only 17 hours of data for my HOO version of Sharpless 224.

After shooting a bunch of the "easier" targets I thought it was time to image one of the more faint ones with the supernova remnant Sharpless 224 as one of the most beautiful ones I could think of.

There are all ready a lot of impressing images of this target, so what I found interesting to attempt was to see how much of the surrounding Ha and OIII I could pick up from a bortle 4 and modest seeing at best. And it turned out that there was quite a lot of both OIII to the south east and huge amount of Ha surrounding the complex.

Processing has been done in Astro Pixel Procesor, PixInSight and Lightroom. As the main data are narrowband, I shot the stars separately in RGB. Stretching of NB data was done in two stages/versions, one for the nebulosity and one fort the background which were then assembled to get the best possible dynamic range. To save as much NB data as possible in the background, I was very careful not to ruin the fine structures when neutralising and extracting the background. As I shot the stars separately I chose to only stretch those minimally and do no reduction at all, which works and looks natural to me.
