Description

Two cosmic animals overlay in this image: the flying bat in red and the squid in blue. These two objects are located in Cepheus constellation, not far from Alderamin star (Alpha Cephei) and are named Sh2-129 (the bat) and Ou4 (the squid). The bat is an Ha emitting region 1300 light years away, the squid is an Oiii 2300 light years away. The squid was discovered only in 2011 by a French amateur and it is a very faint Oiii emission nebula, so it is a quite challenging subject to image, while the bat is a strong Ha emission regions. Its size is 2° 20’, so it is close to 5 times the full moon, but because of its low intensity it requires a telescope for seeing it.
