Description

This is a beautiful and a relatively easy target. I was doing some imaging with my Celestron, since I am having some problems with guiding and artifacts on stars. I decided to image M42, since it was just there. This image was taken with an IDAS Light Pollution (IDAS LP D2) filter. In a different set of images, I actually proved (to myself) that the artifacts are very likely created by the filter. If/when I use just an IR filter they are not as prominent. You will see that the stars exhibit what appears to be color aberration. Anyway, back to M42. I processed the image using AstroPixel Processor (APP). There was no calibration (no flats, no darks, no bias). Like I said, this was unplanned and a very small set of subs. Removed light pollution with APP, and then a very minor cropping in Adobe Photoshop to remove some imperfections at the corners (due to dithering).

To continue the experiment, I processed the image further in PixInsight. Performed photometric color calibration. As I was stretching the image I wasn't sure if I should link or not the RBG channels. The results are quite different. I believe the one not linking the channels has less "red" in it. Not sure why, but I am sure it's explained somewhere. I finished them with curves transformation. In both cases I had to finish the editing in PS to remove the corners as above.

I left as final the one that I like the most. Which one do you prefer?
