Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy!

My first shot with my new iOptron 6 inch Ritchey-Chretien 1370mm f/9 telescope and new SkyWatcher EQ6R Pro mount!

77 X 300 second exposures for over 6 hours of total integration.

The Whirlpool Galaxy, or Messier 51 (M51), is a spectacular spiral galaxy located about 23 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. Comprised of two galaxies (M51A and M51B), it's known for its grand design, enhanced by a past close encounter between the two. The larger, M51A, is home to an active galactic nucleus, suggesting a supermassive black hole at its heart, and has a high rate of star formation due to the galaxies' interaction.

M51 was the first spiral galaxy ever identified, and due to its beauty, it is a favorite among amateur and professional astronomers alike.

In pop culture, M51 has been featured in various science fiction works. For instance, in Star Trek, the Whirlpool Galaxy is known as the "Pinwheel Galaxy" and is the location of Starbase 515.
