On April 30 2022 my wife Marci and I got a tour of
Lick Observatory and attended a talk by Dr. Alex Filippenko outlining the science still going on at Lick well after 100 years of operation. Included in that excellent talk was some commentary on a recent (at the time)
type Ia supernova (SN2022hrs)
discovered on April 16th by Koichi Itagaki in galaxy NGC 4647.
I integrated a quick "photo session" of NGC 4647 (1ea. 360s RGB and 23 90s L frames) in an imaging plan I ran on 2022-05-03, and this is the output. I haven't had a lot of cycles for post, and this was a quick win given the backlog of data I have to process.
The fainter galaxy showing structure is NGC 4647 with the supernova (large bright dot) being far more prominent than I expected, i.e. it's seemingly brighter than both galaxies in the field! Mouseover yields a wider field of the same image showing several additional galaxies in that region which I think is also really neat. In hindsight, I wish I had dedicated more time to this, but oh well. I can always come back.
It's been lightly processed (DBE, SPCC, stretched, light NR) since there's not much data. Although it's not my usual attempt at a pretty picture, I think it's pretty neato.
