Description

Imaged M1, the crab nebula, in OSC RGB on the night of February 20, 2022.

This was a trial run of a new imaging setup.   My objective is to get some higher magnification deep sky images, in particular galaxies this spring.   I broke down the planetary imaging train on my C8 and reconfigured for deep sky with my modified DSLR and ASIAIR Plus controller.  Still working out some kinks in the new setup when this was imaged.  Learned that my Celestron SCT focus motor can't be controlled by the ZWO ASIAIR Plus which was a huge bummer.  Manually focused with a Bahtinov mask on a nearby star for this image sequence and the focus is not great.  Following this imaging session I purchased a ZWO EAF interface bracket for the C8 and swapped out the Celestron focus motor with the EAF from my other setup so that in the future I'll be able to take advantage of the amazing autofocus capability with the EAF/ASIAIR combo.  Also had some trouble with my flats, and ended up purchasing an LED flat panel tracer and spent some time reading up on flats with the ASIAIR Plus. Getting better flats (but still haven't been able to get the autoflat setting to work).  The biggest challenge with this new setup is guiding.  With my wide field setup and the ASIAIR I was reliably getting <1" guiding, but it has been much more variable with this setup.  No surprise given I'm pushing the AVX mount capability much more with the C8 imaging train than my tiny AT60.  I'm working on better balance and fixed a potential issue with the guider mounting, but this aspect needs some work going into galaxy season...

Imaged with Celestron 8" SCT at F6.3 (1290 mm focal length) using a Celestron focal reducer/field flattener, IDAS NGS1 light pollution filter, and full spectrum modified Nikon D5300. Total integration time of ~3 hours (84 subs at ISO200 x 120 sec).

Pre/post-processing in PixInsight.   Images calibrated using Weighted Batch Pre-Processing (BPP) script using darks, flats, and flat darks . Registered and stacked using StarAlighment and Integration processes. Post-processing steps included: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE and noise reduction using MLT, photmetric color calibration, masked stretch, curves transformation, HDR transformation, local histogram transformation, and color saturation adjustment.

UPDATE:  Acquired a new set of data after updating my new C8 setup to include a ZWO EAF and used AIRAIR Plus for focus setting.  Much happier with this result.  Still need to work on improving the guiding, losing about 1/3 of my subs due to excursions that ovalize or trail the stars...

Title: Complete reshoot with EAF controlled focus

Description: Updated the C8 setup to include a ZWO EAF and autofocused using ASIAIR. Completely re-shot the M1 sequence. Much better results in terms of star size and some improvement in detail in M1.
