Description

NGC 6914 is a complex of emission and reflection nebulae in the constellation Cygnus.  The reflection nebulae (VDB 131, VDB 132, and Parsamian 22) are illuminated by stars in the Cygnus OB2 association, surrounded by a sea of swirling hydrogen emissions, including LBN 273.  The dark nebulae LDN 897, 899, and 900 provide stunning contrast. 

This image is a LHRGB composite taken over five nights to yield slightly under 8 hours of data total.  The luminance channel is a combination of the Chroma L and 5 nm H-alpha filters.  The red channel is a combination of the Chroma red and H-alpha filters.  Processing was done in my usual suite of software, with GIMP serving as the main workhorse.  I used Topaz AI for noise reduction, but not sharpening.  No sharpening was necessary on this image, except that I used modest deconvolution on the stack of short luminance subs to tighten up the stars a bit.  I had to make a decision on whether to use stars from the L stack or the Ha stack, and I ended up going with the L stack, despite the fact that some of the brighter stars were overexposed.  I didn’t want to lose any of the fainter stars, and the Ha filter does attenuate the light from the fainter stars pretty severely. 

Overall, I’m loving the Chroma LHRGB filters, but I just wish I had more clear nights to use them since I received them last fall.  This entire project was shot between passing clouds, with an average of only 1.6 hours of data for each night I set up my gear.
