Description

The Veil Nebula is probably my favorite object in the night sky going all the way back to the 1980s when I was doing strictly visual astronomy. Why? I think the fact that it's so elusive (virtually invisible in the eyepiece without an O-III filter) but when you do see it there is all kinds of wispy intricate detail there.
When I started getting something together with astrophotography it was, after a few false starts, one of my first widefield targets to really "come out" beyond all expectations.
Recently I revisited the Veil trying for some closeups of the main sections. This summer I shot the eastern portion in one night with my 550mm "travel rig" and a one-shot color camera and when processed with all the goodness of Pixinsight came out spectacularly well so I decided to have a go with the 1200m refractor at the observatory but limit myself to one night because it was going to be cloudy then 'moony' for awhile, and it's getting late in the season for Cygnus in November.
This is shot in HO + RGB and I am really pleased with this shot!
