Description

I captured this attractive field in August 2023.

Not a super deep image, I set out to create a natural, broadband image for this project. I captured only R, G, and B filtered data. Would have liked to captured some dedicated Lum data as well, but it did not realise for this one.

It was a joy to process. In contrast to the ‘older’ CCD imaging methodology where colour data was often shorter integrations, low resolution (binned) and noisy, and relying on the lum data to put detail back, this was longer colour stacks at full resolution with the CMOS. Much quicker to put together and the results look great.

This got me thinking… do one really need Lum data for a object and project like this? I would like to experiment creating a ‘super lum’ by integrating the colour masters and adding that to the image and see if details and depth are a bit better.

Both the lagoon and the trifid are quite bright at their cores. It was a challenge to keep that under control. Compressing the dynamic range to much leads to a very flat image, where especially the lagoon looks too ‘transparent’. I also did want to to get a little colour down to the core, but adding to much colour leads to over-saturation of the rest of the objects. Careful masking and small incremental additions to the base image in photoshop was needed for both these challenges.

Hope you enjoy and thanks for looking!
