Description

Messier 83, a face on spiral galaxy, captured from Deep Sky West's remote facility in Chile. Discovered in 1752 by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, M 83 is the southernmost galaxy listed in Messier’s catalogue, which makes it one of the most difficult Messier objects for northern observers . Also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, it is classified as an intermediate spiral due to its center having a slight bar shape. The arms are loosely wound with young stars forming in clusters on the edges of the dark dust lanes visible in the spiral arms. Ionized hydrogen's red glow can be seen in the active regions along those lanes. The remnants of dozens of supernova blasts have been discovered in this galaxy using Hubble space telescope data.
