Description

40 BILLION STARS

I photographed the Triangulum Galaxy (M33) from my back garden in NW UK on 5th January. This is our second closest galactic neighbour after the Andromeda Galaxy and is the most distant object that can be seen (from dark enough skies) with the naked eye. This galaxy falls within our "Local Group" of around forty galaxies spread over 10 million light-years which are gravitationally bound to one another. Our Local Group belongs to an even larger structure, a supercluster with the rich Virgo cluster of galaxies at its centre, about 70 million light years away.
