Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a trio of galaxies located in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +26 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Elliptical Galaxy Companions on Arms.

The central large spiral is IC 4461. This galaxy, 430 million light years away, spans 30 arc-seconds and is 80,000 light years in diameter. The bright blue stellar-like object in the upper right galaxy disk looks like a foreground star to me.

The elliptical to the left, IC 4463, is also at the same distance as IC 4461. However, I don’t see any signs of interaction between these two galaxies and I don’t agree with Dr. Arp’s “companion” assessment.

The third galaxy, the spiral MCG +05-34-076 to the lower right, is much further away at 860 million light years. It is 100,000 light years in diameter. It has an interesting polar ring type of structure.
