Description

M42 & Sh2-279 (The Orion Nebula & Running Man Nebula)

The Orion Nebula is one of the most magnificent objects in the night sky. In the past, the Maya called Orion the “Fire of Creation,” and they were right. This diffuse nebula is Earth’s nearest stellar nursery, giving birth to young, hot, blue, and luminous stars. The entire nebula is illuminated by four stars located at its heart, collectively called the Trapezium. The Trapezium’s heat excites the HII, causing it to glow red; the blue color is attributed to the OIII. Orion also hosts reflection nebulae, where the stars’ blue light is scattered by the dust in the region. When observing this object you are looking at a ruptured molecular cloud. Due to triggered star formation you are able to see the birth of stars.

The Running Man Nebula, located to the left of Orion in this image, is also an HII region with reflection nebulae. The reflection nebula is thought to be excited by the hot young star 42 Orionis. Sh2-279 and M42 serve as laboratories for astronomers. M42 has helped us make strides in understanding star birth, exoplanets, and has recently contributed to the discovery of a new type of object named Jupiter-mass binary objects (JUMBOs). These free-floating objects are neither stars nor planets and orbit in pairs with no central star.
