Description

The Silver Dollar, or Sculptor Galaxy is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky, and thus has been known
for quite a long time. It was recorded first by Caroline Herschel in 1783 and is known as a “starburst”
galaxy, meaning that it is undergoing intense star formation.

NGC 253 is the prototype of a special group of spiral galaxies in which the sprial arms are often defined
by “dust lanes” and areas of great complexity, rather than the usual luminous gas and nebulae in typical
spiral galaxies. It, along with five other galaxies which includes the Needle’s Eye Galaxy (NGC 247), form
the gravitational centre of the Sculptor Galaxy Group, our nearest galaxy grouping. It lies some 11.4
Mly away. The sturbust activity is located in a large number of places in the galaxy’s halo. It is believed
that this could have been triggered by the collision with a dwarf galaxy some 200 My ago.
